Our Highland Farm

How Balblair Bothies Was Born

Hello,

I’m Pete Campbell, Highland farmer and your host at Balblair Bothies – ably assisted by Rachel Murray, who makes your stay comfortable while maintaining her “day job” as a successful brand photographer.

As you may have realised I’ve a proud Scottish name, and feel privileged to share in the rich Highland heritage – Clan Campbell is historically one of the largest and most powerful of the legendary Highland clans.

Don’t worry though – the days of bloody clan feuding are long gone, and nowadays the Highlands are probably one of the most peaceful places on earth.

I certainly love living here on the farm with a selection of sheep, cattle, horses and assorted other four-legged friends. In fact, it’s so good that one day I woke up and realised I was being selfish not to share.

That’s why I decided to renovate the old disused quarry weighbridge office on my property and open it up to accommodate visitors.

Experienced in Highland Hospitality

I’m no stranger to the hospitality and tourism industry. For more than 20 years I owned and operated the Falls of Shin Visitor Centre, just down the road from the farm – a role I thoroughly enjoyed, being a real “people person”

At the time the Falls were the largest single tourist destination in the Highlands – a dramatic set of falls and rapids on the River Shin where majestic Atlantic salmon leap upstream to their breeding grounds.

I sold the Visitor Centre in 2001 and since then have been enjoying working the farm. Now I feel the time is right to welcome visitors to our area again, so I’m looking forward to meeting you at Balblair Bothies.

I’m probably the best person to chat to about local activities and attractions, and I’ll be delighted to reveal to you the best of our remote, beautiful Sutherland – once land of the Vikings.

A Memorable and Unusual Getaways

There’s plenty of room on my land for couples and their dogs to enjoy a relaxing break, or for passing tourists to explore and get a feel for our idyllic lifestyle here in the Highlands.

I self-built the first of our Balblair Bothies to a good standard, and our guests have been full of praise for the facilities. I’m not done yet, though – building of more high-specification luxury Bothies is well underway on my land, each located well away from each other so peace and privacy is not compromised.

I have tried to think of everything that the modern traveller needs and appreciates, so even though we’re in a remote spot, you don’t have to go without your home comforts and conveniences.

Rachel and I look forward to welcoming you for a pleasant self-catering Bothy stay which we can guarantee will be one of the most memorable and unusual getaways you have ever experienced.

See you soon!
